About Blutone

Hi! I'm Blutone, aka John Hicks.  I am a Cambridgeshire based entertainer influenced by genres such as Blues, Rock n Roll, Jazz and Funk.

I regularly gig as a solo entertainer, a duet with Blutone & The Druid and with my Blues band.

For many years, I have played bass in many bands and realised at the age of 50 that I had never done my own thing and lead musical projects or fronted bands, something that I needed to address, give it a go and see where it took me.

I recently asked myself why I hadn't written about one of the most important aspects of my life, playing guitar and so this was how Blutone's Boutique Baby! came about.

The aim of 'Boutique Baby!' is to write about guitars and gigs and share joy as I explore guitars, amps, pedals and tone in general.

I finally got to try out a Baum Original Series Wingman!

In this article I am going to give you a hands on review of the Baum Original Series Wingman, Leaper Tone and Conquer 59. On Sunday, I travelled up to Birmingham to visit the UK Guitar Show and I had a list of who I wanted to visit and which guitars to try out. At the top of that list was Baum Guitars.  Based out of Aarhus, Denmark, this small but mighty company is bringing something special to guitar players all over the world.  Initially a custom guitar builder producing guitars costing in excess of £3k, thus not being accessible to many guitar players who are not professional, they have been able to bring their unique designs to more affordable price points that means that more and more people can purchase their guitars. For me, I see that Baum are bringing fresh ideas to guitar design whilst celebrating retro finishes and touches a vision from designer Morten Bau. The video below from Andertons gives a great overview of the range that is available. Not everyone can purchase a gu

Danish Pete Honore joins Chapman Guitars with the unveiling of the DPT1.

At the Guitar Show UK , Chapman Guitars announced a new addition to their signature artists,  Peter HonorĂ©. Otherwise known as 'Danish Pete', Peter HonorĂ© has long collaborated with Chapman Guitars co-founder Lee Anderton (aka The Captain) on the Anderton's YouTube channel, a place where Rob Chapman (the other co-owner of Chapman Guitars) also collaborated. The birth of Chapman Guitars resulted from a novel approach to guitar design whereby the Andertons / Chapman Guitars social media community were consulted on what type of guitars should be build and to which specifications. In the six years that Chapman Guitars have been trading they have brought a refreshing take on guitar design, sales and distribution across the industry, taking styles of industry favourites and releasing their own novel guitars. Followers of Rob Chapman will be aware of what an accomplished guitarist he is and his passion for heavy rock and shredding styles of playing guitar and with the addition

The most 'un-boutique' guitar I have tried but it's not bad! The Jet Guitars JS-400.

When I visited the Guitar Show UK , I had a list of guitars that I wanted to try out, most of which were mid range and up in price but I did have an outlier that I wanted to check out. Jet Guitars. Jet Guitars are a budget guitar company that claims to do the following: "JET guitars offer a premium playing experience at an affordable price." So there must be hundreds of brands doing something similar such as Squire, Cort, Harley Benton and many more, so how is Jet going to stand out? The Jet Guitars JS-400 in Sea Foam Green Relic So I have to say that I was setting a low expectation.  I knew how cheap these guitars retailed for and surely any profit they make would be based on many unit sales rather than per unit at these prices, especially as they work through the distributor Hal Leonard , who would need to have some kind of margin. My expectation with Jet Guitars was that I was going to be trying out something that was probably going to be well built but not something that
